Everyone wishes to find ways to save money around the household, yet when home improvements are required it can be difficult to stop such developments from affecting your bank account. There is however a number of ways to make small yet effective changes to the household without breaking your bank account, some of those changes are even easy to do yourself in a couple of hours and for a low cost.
Cut down your energy bills
Once your rent or mortgage is paid, the next house cost is usually your energy bills. Electricity and gas prices have gone up in the past few years, and even if you have managed to lock prices for a set period of time, it is always important to make sure you do not pay more than you should, particularly when it comes to wasting energy. Having a high energy bill is fine if you get value out of your usage, but if it is just a bulb that stays on while you are gone, or the heat that escaped through improperly insulated windows, that is a tragic waste of your hard earned money.
Investing in a programmable thermostat is a great way to save a few hundred pounds per year on your energy bills. Simply programme it to cool down whilst you sleep and warm up just before you wake as opposed to being on full burst throughout the night.
Another way to save on heating if you have a chimney is to clean it up and go back to log burning instead of traditional heating. Having a fire in the house is lovely, and companies such as Firewood Centre actually deliver dry firewood to your doorstep so making a fire at home has never been easier.
LED lighting
Swapping your incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs is a great way to save hundreds on electricity costs per year. The best thing about Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is their incredible lifespan. Although a little pricey to purchase initially, there are no replacement bulb expenses to contend with which makes running LEDs a hassle free process and one that is environmentally friendly.
Roof insulation
Heat loss is a common problem in many households, and in actual fact, the floors, roof and walls tend to count for around 45% of heat loss in the average home. By insulating an attic, you can prevent 30% of this loss from occurring, which of course means lower energy bills.
Low flow showerheads
Most household showerheads waste a great deal of water. Swapping your standard showerhead for a low-flow style will in fact help you save water. This changeover won’t however compromise a great shower and consumers can save up to 8,000 gallons of water per year. What the low flow shower does is adding air to the water flow, so instead of having a transparent flow you have a bubbly, white flow that feels just as good as the previous one while using a fraction of the water.
Low flow toilet
Just like a high-powered shower, the average household toilet will use a great deal of water per year. A low-flow toilet made by companies like Toto toilets on the other hand will use a mere 1.6 gallons per flush. Many of the styles available on the market fit in with a contemporary bathroom and are available for a reasonable cost.

Cleaning the lint from your dryer and the filters from your HVAC is super simple to do and has a pretty big immediate impact to lower the energy usage and save money. A few dollars a month in savings easy and it takes just minutes. Great tips Pauline!

Water is a big money guzzler for us so we look for every opportunity to reduce our usage. It’s worth it, our water bill for the year is a few hundred dollars less now than it used to be. That money can be used profitably elsewhere now.

Cleaning your HVAC is indeed the best way to keep energy costs down. So many people don’t do it, and it can cause so many problems, as well as make it all run harder and waste more energy. It’s like a clogged drain, the water is draining, it just takes a while.

I love the programmable thermostat that I have, I can set it and forget it. I have tried everything on the list (which has been a big help financially) except for the low flow shower head. I have been afraid to purchase, as I am afraid I won’t like it. Thanks for sharing.

Switching to LED lights saved me a lot of money since I’ve had them for a few years. They were a little more pricey then, but since then they’ve paid themselves off and have cut my bill waaaaaaaaaay down.

I agree with the low flow toilet point. A typical toilet uses an average of 20 gallons of water per person a day. With that in mind the installation of a low flow toilet will cut that amount in more than half over a year.
Toilet manufacturers have met the challenge of improved designs to get adequate flushing using less water and the resultant reductions in consumption of the precious resource of fresh water have been noticeable.

I didn’t realize that insulating an attic could reduce energy bills so much. I knew that insulation would help a bit, but reducing energy bills by 30% is a huge difference. I’ll have to check to make sure my attic is well insulated, because otherwise I feel like I’m just losing money. Thanks for the information!

Hey!
The post is really informative and interesting too.
This is really helpful for the beginners .
I must say that a simple and easy way of assessing the condition of an electrical system is to feel for hot spots on the receptacles or switches.
They are an indicator of overloaded electric circuits. Immediate attendance to hot spots has to be effectuated. You may prefer a shortage of receptacles than exposing yourself to a risk bore by a supra-solicited circuit.
Thanks a lot for the share.
Keep doing good work.
God bless U!
